84,600

What would you do if you were given $84,600? Would you pay off your bills? Buy a new car? Put a down payment on a house? Throw a chunk in your 401K? Start looking at stocks? Go on vacation?

Most of us would, in some way or another, invest at least some of it. Buying a newer car that gets better gas millage and requires less maintenence, putting a down payment on a home, saving for your retirement - all of these are ways in which we can improve the quality of our lives.

Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that anyone will show up at our front door with a check for $84,600 to do with as we please. However, what we are given is 84,600 seconds in a day. Knowing this you should now ask yourself - am I spending those seconds, or am I investing them?

If you're handed just under $85k and told that you can do whatever you want with it, then it's doubtful that anyone would hold it against you for blowing a chunk on a relaxing vacation and a new TV or computer. But it would be awfully silly, in a time when most of us barely make enough money to live comfortable lives (and some don't even come close to that), let alone extravagant ones, to spend it all on non-necessities.

So the point that I am trying to make is this: Every day - take some time for yourself to goof off and do whatever you feel like doing. You deserve it. But also make sure that you spend at least a portion of that day investing in your future. Meditation, exercise, reading non-fiction, doing math puzzles like Sudoku, learning about a new subject to expand our knowledge and understanding of the world...these are all ways in which we can painlessly improve the quality of our lives. And with 84,600 seconds in a day, who can afford not to use up 1800 of those (only 30 minutes!) in the pursuit of a better tomorrow?
